Kori and I spent quite a lot brainstorming pre-production ideas on this EP. The M.O. was to “explore” so the door was WIDE open for creating a new sound for her songs. It was great teamwork to say the least. The goal was to also bring about a higher energy than she had ever had in her previous projects. It was an inspired journey with awesome positive energy attached throughout (which I genuinely feel translated to the music). I do thank Kori for all her trust in letting me have the freedom to “paint” the initial picture for each song. We worked brilliantly together throughout this project and hooked up remotely via VSN (Virtual Studio Nashville) for a lot of the post mix / mastering tweaks.
“Tangled Up” initially had a version w/o the lead guitar. Kori called me one day and said something was bothering her on that song – that the “hook” line wasn’t defined enough. So, after talking it out, lead guitar seemed to be the best option. I immediately strapped on my guitar, hooked Kori up on VSN and began doing overdubs in real time, with me in Nashville and Kori in her home studio in California. We rocked it!!
As you can hear from both “before” versions, there was quite a transformation between what I initially received and what we ended up with. Most of the melodies were derived from parts of Kori’s midi performances. For example. Kori’s midi piano part might have been split into 3 parts. A lead, chords (resounded with pads via Omnisphere / Atmosphere for the most part and other virtual synths I have in my rig) and the lower end, sometimes acting as a counterpoint sound to compliment the other two parts sonically as well as part wise. Kori had other midi parts that I resounded and in some cases, restructured in order to enhance the “hook” factor in her material.

Comments:
“Blue Ice” is one of my fav’s on this EP project. Kori came to Nashville for those overdubs with Tom Shiness, who did a STELLAR job interpreting her melodic ideas (and then some!!). This was a sonic journey for me and was my MOST favorite to convert to 5.1. We did surround mixes to all these songs on this EP, which made for an even more exiting and richer listening experience. I have to say, once I mixed these song in 5.1, it became VERY hard to go back to listening and mixing on 2 speakers again!!
