CD: From The Vault (A Collection of works by Rick Springfield and Jeff Silverman)
“From the Vault” is a collection of songs that Rick and Jeff co-produced, performed on and co-wrote during the 1980s and 1990s. This was released by Frontiers Records in 2010.
Although I had the freedom to do whatever I wanted for the design on this project, it was a bit of a challenge. There were not a lot of photos available from this time period and many of those that we had or were sent to us, were not that great in quality. I was also told by the record company that they wanted not only the credits and photos, but also the words for all 13 songs to be included in the CD booklet and I was restricted to 12 pages. I already had two pages completely taken up by the cover and the back cover as well as the inside cover page that listed all the credits. So, 9 pages remained for not only the lyrics for 13 songs, but also photos. EEEKS!
In the meantime, I had found a good photo that we could use of a vault for the front cover and both Rick and Jeff approved of this. This was turning into a much larger project than I had anticipated. I really wanted this project to “shine” and the photograph of the generic vault was just not “doing it” for us at the moment. I was very fortunate to have a good friend I had met in California who is an amazing graphic designer / artist. I sent him the photo of the vault to get his suggestions and he was so excited that he decided to collaborate on the cover concept with me.
While I wrestled with the inside booklet, my friend worked on the images I gave him and basically helped me “co-produce” the cover. The results of our efforts were images that were truly unique to this CD project. The record label received everything that they wanted and both Rick and Jeff were very pleased and felt this was a package that represented their vision.
