BEFORE & AFTER COMMENTS:
This example shows the beginning, middle and end of the writing / production process. This one sample includes 3 different stages. The first, is a work tape from Dustin and I writing together via SKYPE. Next, is a sample of me playing the basic tracks and singing a temp lead vocal as a “guide” for Dustin (which I do on a lot of my co-writes) so that we can both see how the words and melody “sing.”
I did a stripped down basic track, including drums, bass and acoustic guitar in order to leave room for Dustin to create his parts. I try to approach all the harms as if they are the final ones. 9 times out of 10, they end up being used, as they were on this song. The initial drums (tweaked a bit more and enhanced) along with the bass and background vocals were keepers for the “After” version.
The last sample shows what the final mixed and mastered version of the song sounds like with Dustin singing and playing electric and acoustic guitars. You can hear a few of Tyler’s stellar leads popping in and out of the outro section.
This song literally took us both on a journey and in the end, is some of Dustin’s finest work yet, not only as an artist, but as a writer.

BEFORE & AFTER COMMENTS:
The “before” is the original final mix/mastered version we did 2 years ago when Dustin was 14.
The “after” shows Dustin’s same vocal and electric guitar performances with the addition of Tyler Reese, on support and lead electric guitars. This “after” is also remixed and re-mastered.

The above video shows the recording process for the making of “Body Bag” and demonstrates how we made technology work for all of us, so we could bridge the distance factor and work together as if we were in the same room. This guitar session was conducted with Tyler in Fredericksburg VA, Dustin near Chicago and me in Nashville, TN.
I was controlling their computer and session from my studio in Nashville. You can not only see how easily this process works in action but, also hear how Tyler plays his incredible leads (and shreds it like no one I know). The video clearly shows the exciting real time capabilities we have available at Palette Studio for connecting “door to door” via my Avid Pro Tools HD 3 Accel System and your home / home studio via iTunes.
Editor’s Note:
Unfortunately, the versions of these 2 songs remain unreleased. Although they are included on an EP the artist is currently selling, along with a third song “I Can’t Do Anything For You” that he and Jeff wrote (see full productions), they are not Jeff Silverman’s arrangements or productions. The amazing guitar parts of Tyler Reese are also noticeably missing from the versions on this EP as is Rick Springfield as a guest artist.
